En agosto tendremos la oportunidad de ver a NILE nuevamente en la Argentina junto a MATAN S.A. y 1917. Por este motivo, nos conectamos con Karl Sanders para conversar un poco acerca del pasado y la actualidad de la banda estadounidense. A diferencia de otras veces, y dado que tenemos lectores de diferentes nacionalidades, en esta decidimos compartir la charla que mantuvimos con polifacético músico, en inglés y en español. Que la disfruten!

METAL-DAZE: Muy buenas Karl, ¿cómo estás? Saludos desde el portal argentino Metal-Daze. ¿Cómo van las cosas por South Carolina?
KARL SANDERS: Muy bien, ¿Cómo estás tú?
MD: Seguramente has respondido a la misma cuestión mil veces, pero es casi obligada. Hace unos meses los fans de NILE quedábamos sorprendidos por la salida de la banda de Dallas Toler-Wade tras 20 años contigo. Sin entrar en las razones que él tuviese para dicha decisión, ¿cómo os afecto y cómo lo vivisteis como banda?
KS: La política de NILE es no hablar de ex-miembros. Así que, aunque sea preguntado mil veces, no voy a discutir ese tópico a la prensa, no importa quién pregunte :-). Lo que SI TE PUEDO decir es que George, Brad y yo no podríamos estar más contentos. Tenemos un espíritu fresco y renovado dentro de la banda y estamos muy felices y agradecidos de poder estar haciendo metal juntos.
MD: La difícil labor de sustitución la llevó a cabo Brian Kingsland. ¿Cómo ha sido la integración del mismo en la banda? Os acompañó en la gira que hicisteis por Norteamérica junto a OVERKILL, ¿Cómo se desenvolvió en su labor en directo?
KS: Somos muy afortunados de estar trabajando con Brian. Es un músico brutal con mucho talento. Sus voces tienen un registro brutal genial y es un guitarrista increíble con un estilo muy único. Y todavía más importante, es una persona con los pies en la tierra, fácil de trabajar con él y una excelente incorporación para NILE.
MD: En agosto, tras unas cuantas fechas en Europa, incluso en Dubái (después te preguntaré sobre ello), NILE realizará una pequeña gira por Latinoamérica, siendo una de la fechas -el 25 de Agosto- en Buenos Aires. ¿Cuáles son vuestras expectativas al respecto? ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre el público sudamericano?
KS: El público sudamericano es uno de los más intensos de la tierra. Los fans metaleros de Sudamérica son absolutamente la mejor razón por la que viajar a Sudamérica (risas). Se podría decir que no se ha experimentado un show de metal, la completa extensión de una experiencia metálica brutal, hasta que no se toca en Latinoamérica.
MD: Como antes indicaba, este verano estaréis tocando en los Emiratos Árabes, concretamente en Dubái. ¿Es la primera vez que tocáis en Oriente Medio? ¿Cómo es la respuesta en general hacia una banda como NILE, es decir, un grupo occidental con una fuerte influencia cultural de medio oriente en vuestras canciones? ¿Habéis tocado en otros lugares por allí?
KS: Ese va a ser nuestro primer show formal en esa parte del mundo. A lo largo de los años hemos intentado concertar algunos shows en Oriente Medio, pero están ocurriendo por supuesto muchos cambios allí en la actualidad que lo han hecho posible.
MD: En agosto se cumplen dos años desde que salió “What should not be Unearth”. ¿Estáis ya pensando en nuevo disco? ¿Tenéis ya algo compuesto o ideas en mente?
KS: Si, hemos comenzado a escribir canciones para el nuevo álbum de NILE.
MD: ¿Habéis pensado vosotros alguna vez en escribir alguna canción fuera de la temática del antiguo Egipto y Mesopotamia? Por ejemplo, UNLEASHED en su disco de 2012 “Odalheim” dedicaban una canción a los guerreros Mayas, totalmente alejada de su temática habitual de vikingos y mitología nórdica. ¿Sería salirse de la propia esencia de NILE?
KS: Creo que lo has expresado correctamente. Estaría fuera de la “esencia” de NILE. También he observado que es muy imprudente por parte de las bandas de metal alejarse mucho de las expectativas de los fans.
MD: En 2018 se cumplen veinte años de la edición del primer disco de NILE, “Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka”. ¿Habéis pensado en algún tipo de evento especial al respecto, como quizá nuevas ediciones o shows/tours especiales?
KS: Bueno, creo que seguramente veamos algo de la nueva reedición por parte de Relapse. ¿Tour especial? No lo creo. Esta banda no vive de la nostalgia. Tenemos dos nuevos miembros en la banda que quieren dejar su propia marca a lo largo del mundo con NILE. Van a estar más interesados en hacer un nuevo álbum de NILE que parta culos. Y así es como nos sentimos también George y yo.
MD: En cuanto a tu proyecto en solitario de música ambiental, ¿cómo va? ¿Podemos esperar algo de actividad en un futuro próximo?
KS: Va despacio. Tengo unas cuantas ideas, pero lo recientemente ocurrido con NILE me ha mantenido ocupado. Reinventar NILE -con esencialmente dos tipos- no fue una tarea fácil o para tomar a la ligera. Y ahora estamos también trabajando en la composición del próximo disco de NILE. No queda mucho tiempo extra para los proyectos en solitario (risas). Espero que eventualmente tenga algo de tiempo para el próximo disco.
MD: Pues eso ha sido todo. Ha sido un auténtico placer tenerte respondiendo algunas de nuestras preguntas, la últimas líneas son tuyas.
KS: Gracias a ti Ernes por este tiempo charlando juntos. Estoy deseando de ver pronto a todos los fans del metal en Argentina.

METAL-DAZE: -Hi Karl. Welcome to the Argentinian webzine Metal-Daze. How are you doing?
KARL SANDERS: Fine. How are you ?
MD: – For sure you answered the same question for a thousand times, but it’s almost an obligatory one. Some months ago the fans of NILE we were surprised with the leaving of Dallas Toler-Wade from the band after twenty years with you. Without entering in the reasons why, how did you live? How did you feel as band?
KS: Nile policy is not to discuss ex-members. So, even tho I may get asked a 1000 times, I won’t be discussing that topic in print, no matter who asks J What I CAN tell you, is that George, Brad and I couldn’t be happier. We have a fresh, renewed spirit within the band, and we are all very happy and thankful to be making Metal together.
MD: -The difficult substitution work is made by Brian Kingsland. How was his incorporation in NILE? He already play along with you in your tour over North America together with OVERKILL. I’m sure he is getting along very well, how do you see him?
KS: We are very lucky to be working with Brian. He is a very talented and brutal musician. His vocals have a great brutal range, and he is an incredible guitarist, with a very unique style. More importantly, he is also a down-to-earth kind of person, easy to work with, and an excellent addition to Nile.
MD: – In august, after some gigs in Europe and even in Dubai (I’m going to ask you later about), you’ll be touring over South America, taking place one of the dates in Buenos Aires (Argentina). How are your expectations about? How is your opinion about south American crowd?
KS: South American audiences are some of the most intense audiences on planet Earth. South American Metal fans are also the absolute best reason to travel to South America. Lol One could say – that one has not truly experienced a Metal show, the full extent of brutal metal experience, until one plays shows in Latin America.
MD: – As I said, you’ll be playing in the United Arab Emirates, concretely in Dubai. Is it the first time you play in the Middle East? How is the response there with a band like NILE, I mean, an occidental band with a strong cultural middle east influence in your songs? Did you play in other places there?
KS: This will be our first proper show in that part of the world. We have, over the years, attempted to book shows in the Middle East, but there are of course many challenges in actually making that come to fruition.
MD: – Already two years (in august) since your last album “What should not be Unearth” was out. Are you thinking in a new NILE album? Do you composed some new stuff?
KS: Yes, we have already started writing songs for the next Nile album.
MD: – Did you think in writing some song outside of the Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia theme? For instance, UNLEASED in their album of 2012 “Odalheim”, wrote a song about the Maya Warriors, far away from their usual Viking and Northern mythology theme. Would it be going out of NILE’s essence?
KS: I think you said that correctly. It would be out of Nile’s “essence” I have also seen that it is very unwise for Metal bands to wander too far astray from Fan expectations.
MD: – In 2018 will be twenty years since the first NILE’s full-length “Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka” was edited. Can we wait for an special celebration, like maybe new editions or special shows/tours?
KS: Well, of a certainty, I think we will see some form of re-release from Relapse. Special tour? I don’t think so. This band isn’t about nostalgia. We have 2 very fresh/ new guys in the band, who want to make their own mark upon the world with Nile. They are going to be more interested in making a kick ass new Nile album. And that’s the way George and I feel too.
MD: – As for your solo ambient music project, how is it going? Could we wait for some new KARL SANDERS stuff?
KS: Its slow going. I have a few ideas for it, but recent events with Nile have kept me very busy. Reinventing Nile -with essentially 2 new guys- was not an easy undertaking, or a task to be taken lightly. And now, we are also working on the songwriting for the next Nile album. It doesn’t leave a whole lotta extra time for solo projects. Lol J Eventually, I hope, I will have time for the next Saurian album.
MD: – So, that’s all. Thank you very much. It was a very huge pleasure to have you here answering some of our questions. Last lines are yours.
